Egg Donation Procedure - The Donor Egg Program for South African Egg Donors

Thank you sincerely if you are intersted in becoming an egg donor.  All egg donors are counselled about the egg donor program.

Egg Donation Process - Egg donors are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable. - Have a meeting to sign consent forms, etc. The process of egg donation and every thing involved in egg donation will be explained again.  On the same day, blood tests will be done.  For these blood tests you will need to fast for about 10 hours before the test.  If blood tests confirm that every thing is fine, next is the physical/ internal scan with the doctor.  If all is fine, then you are ready to start the egg donation programme with your next menstrual cycle. This means you start taking medication to stimulate egg and follicle development for about 2 weeks. During this time you will be monitored closely by means of about 3 scans.

Egg Donation Process for Egg Donors:

  1. Appointment for medical evaluation and detailed explanation of how program works. A consent form is also signed indicating that the donor has no responsibility or claim there of to the child that may be born from this egg donation.
  2. Blood tests to confirm required hormone levels are done immediately after the appointment.  You will need to fast - so no eating and no drinking for 10 hours before your appointment..
  3. You will have an internal scan a week after the blood tests to confirm your suitability as an egg donor.  At the time of the scan, the blood tests will also be discussed.  This will be between 7am and 9am.
  4. Once an egg donation recipient has confirmed to proceed, baby2mom will confirm the egg donor's availbility.
  5. The egg donor will be guided ito taking the contraceptive pill to align cycles.
  6. Menstrual cycles will then be synchronised between the egg donor and the egg donation recipient.
  7. The actual egg donation treatment or egg donor program commences when the egg donor starts her period.  With the start of the egg donor programme, the egg donor takes medication to stimulate follicle and egg development for a period of about 2 weeks. The donor will need to have injections over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. The injections are very easy to administer and are administered much the same as a diabetic would give himself an insulin injection.
  8. During this time of about 2 weeks – the egg donor comes in for about 2 or 3 scans to monitor the donors’ response to the medications and to evaluate egg size and growth. These scans have to be done on specific days but egg donors can come in to the clinic from as early as 7am and donors are not required to wait. Egg donors are seen first because every one knows what a special deed they are doing. These scans are really quick, so you can be in and out in no time.  These scans are normally on day 2 and day 10.
  9. Once the egg donor ovulates, the eggs are ready to be extracted. This is a very simple procedure that requires a morning at the clinic. Egg donors are given an injection that makes them sleep.  Whilst asleep, the eggs are retrieved via the vagina.  This is not an operation – there are no incisions that are going to hurt afterwards or leave any scars. Worst side effect is slight bloatedness.  Egg donors can go home within an hour or two of having the procedure done.

Egg Donation Remuneration - This is paid by egg donation recipients on the day of egg retrieval - when the donor eggs are ready to be donated:

  1. Egg donors are not responsible for any of the costs that are attached to this procedure. The only responsibility on the egg donor is to get to the clinic and arrive for the scheduled appointments.
  2. Egg donors will receive a cash donation of R6000,00 on the day of egg retrieval.
  3. In the unfortunate event that the egg donor program is cancelled because the egg donor has not responded well to egg retrieval, she will receive a R2,000 egg donor donation.
  4. In the unfortunate event that no eggs are retrieved on the day of egg retreival, the donor will receive a R3,000 egg donor donation.

Egg Donor Confidentiality

Egg donation is kept anonymous and confidential.  Egg donors are treated with absolute respect and their details kept entirely confidential.  Upon being interested in egg donation, you may be asked for a picture of yourself. This is just to match you up to a recipient. If you are uncomfortable with this, it is quite acceptable and you need not provide any picture.  Egg donation is a generous deed of the heart to help another couple. The egg donor may know the profile of the couple she is helping. Similarly the donor’s profile will be communicated to the recipient. There is never an exchange of names.  South African Egg Donation encourages anonymous egg donation and confidential egg donation.

Risks Iro Egg Donation

  1. The egg retrieval process is not dangerous.
  2. The medication does have slight side effects in that it makes you a little irritable, sometimes tearful. One can feel bloated almost as if you are about to have a period. Some donors seem to breeze through with very little side affects, others seem to feel it more. Drinking a lot of water helps to minimise any discomfort. The egg retrieval process may make egg donors feel a little bloated and uncomfortable for a few days, but as each day goes by it will get better and by the time your next menses arrive you should be back to normal again. This should happen 10 days to 2 weeks after you have had the eggs removed.
  3. Egg donation is not harmful to your own fertility. Neither do any of the drugs have a lasting side effect nor do they do any damage to your ovaries. In fact nothing that we do will compromise your fertility, however you need to understand there are other underlying reasons for infertility; for example blocked tubes, poor sperm count, and we could never assure you that later on you may not have a problem with something like that as we are only focused on your ovaries at this point.
